Middle School Students

Welcome to New Buffalo Middle SchoolNew Buffalo Middle School is excited about the 2011-2012 school year because of the challenges and opportunities that are part of the middle school experience. NBMS is fortunate to have an excellent faculty and staff, dedicated to serving and educating young adolescents. Our goal is to provide students with a quality education in a safe and civil learning environment. The State of Michigan has adopted the Common Core State Standards (www.corestandards.org) for English/Language Arts and Mathematics. Our curricula for Social Studies and Science are developed from the grade level curriculum expectations, known as GLCEs (http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7-140-28753_33232---,00.html). Parents are encouraged to become familiar with core standards and GLCEs because they guide teachers in the preparation of middle school core content course (Math, English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Science) lessons. Exploratory classes at NBMS are held in the afternoon. Our students are encouraged to deepen and extend their learning in physical education, Spanish, SmartLab™, drama, choir, dance, art, healthy living, band, or guided academics classes.
Advisory teachers have planned a year of learning and fun around the theme, “NBMS (New Buffalo Middle School) Amazing Race.” Advisory classes stress personal responsibility by checking planners, listening to student concerns, and recognizing good deeds. Approximately once per month classes will pause to gather in convocation (an assembly) to witness students’ performances, share good news, and report progress on their Amazing Race. In addition, advisory classes will pursue academic “Success” by practicing specific lessons and skills designed for them.
The New Buffalo community has provided us with an extraordinary school building and educational program. We understand that it is our responsibility to do our personal best in all of our school endeavors; to respect ourselves and others' needs to learn and grow; and to keep our school community safe and supportive at all times.
We encourage parents and taxpayers to visit us, so we can show you the great kids and good things happening at New Buffalo Middle School!
