Knowing two languages is our goal at New Buffalo Area Schools

  • Every student in the New Buffalo Area School District will speak two languages by the time they graduate, as we now have a K-12 Spanish language program.
  • In our schools, we also have ELL students (English Language Learners) who are already fluent in another language, but are working to improve their English language skills. The native languages of these students are Spanish, Lithuanian, Polish, Vietnamese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Russian.
  • At each school, they receive individual or small group instruction in English language skills such as reading, pronunciation, writing and speaking.
  • The part-time Coordinator provides English language instruction for these students and also serves as the liaison between the regular education teachers, parents and administration to ensure student academic success.

Meet Mrs. Brooks

Mrs. Brooks is the K-12 Coordinator/Teacher of English Language Learner programs at New Buffalo Area Schools. She grew up in Watervliet and earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from Michigan State University. She also studied Spanish linguistics and literature at the Universidad de Valencia in Valencia,Spain while an undergrad at MSU. In August 2009, she entered a graduate program in Teaching English as a Second Language at Indiana University and successfully completed the program in May 2011. She is currently certified to teach K-12 English as a Second Language in Indiana and Michigan.
Mrs. Brooks taught Spanish and French for almost thirty years at New Buffalo High School and retired from that position in June 2010. During that time she organized and led nine student study trips to Mexico and Spain. She also travelled to Spain,Costa Rica and Peru as a member of the National Council of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, (SHH) or National Spanish Honor Society, for which she served as the State Director of Michigan and the Region Three Director. In July 2009, while serving as a chaperone for a an SHH trip to Peru for national scholarship winners, she climbed up Machu Picchu, the ancient city of the Incas which is high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It was an amazing experience that she'll never forget.
