Welcome to New Buffalo Elementary School!  The elementary building has approximately 250 students in grades PreK-5.  Each grade level has two teachers per section with the exception of 2nd grade having three sections.  Class sizes range from 14 to 24 students.  New Buffalo Elementary was named a National Blue Ribbon School in October of 2020.  We are a Title I school which encompasses 3 paraprofessionals and a Title I Coordinator.  These professionals assist students who need extra support based on data results.  On top of that, we have additional paraprofessionals that contribute to the classroom during the educational process. NBES strives to provide your child the best educational experience possible.

I became the building principal at New Buffalo Elementary in the 2017-2018 school year, but came to the district in 2006 as a teacher.  My family and I enjoy all the wonderful things New Buffalo has to offer.  My children attend NBAS and are active in many of the community events.  Frequently, you will see us out and about, participating in some of the local events that our community has to offer.  We love the summertime in New Buffalo because it feels as if you are always on vacation here.

The elementary focuses on engaging families and places emphasis on building positive relationships with students and parents.  Each year, the elementary school continues to increase student growth and achievement using NWEA, M-STEP, DIBELS, and Delta Math as measurement tools.  Staff members have aligned ELA and math content with rigorous formative assessments to provide individualized instruction opportunities.  Together, we analyze assessment results to determine learning paths for each student.  And finally, NBES is a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) school, with support from Berrien RESA, to improve our efforts in recognizing positive behaviors among our students while establishing strong behavioral expectations.

As your building principal, student academic success is my number one priority, while ensuring your child feels safe during their learning experiences.  We are fortunate to have a full time School Resource Officer in our building.  Deputy Troup is a member of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department and a SWAT Team representative. He is able to provide additional instructional topics and learning opportunities for our students throughout the school year.

New Buffalo Elementary School has many resources to meet the wide range of needs for our students.  NBES is the best place to be when it comes to learning and tailoring instruction to individual needs.  Class sizes remain small to ensure we give each and every child the attention that they need.  Pre-Kindergarten through first grade are 1-to-1 iPads, while second through fifth grade are 1-to-1 Chromebooks.  The curriculum is rigorous and consistently measured to make sure all students are understanding topics being presented.  Professional development opportunities are offered frequently to ensure staff members are up to date with current teaching practices.

Children are provided learning opportunities in the areas of art, music, physical education, Spanish, library, technology, and weekly guidance lessons.  If a child meets qualifications, they may be provided additional support in Title I, Speech and Language, or Special Education.  There are many after school activities that are provided by our B.A.S.E. program.  Please be sure to check in with our B.A.S.E. Director, Rodney Wash, to be cognizant of the after school events.

Communication to families is important to me.  Each Sunday I send out a weekly update called “NBES News” to inform parents and students of upcoming events.  Teachers are encouraged to send weekly newsletters out to their families to keep them abreast of what their child is learning in their class as well as important events coming ahead.

I look forward to a great, positive year with you and your student(s).  Parents are first and foremost the most important aspect in student learning.  A strong partnership between the school and home is paramount.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need anything.  I can be reached at 269-469-6060, email abowen@nbas.org, or in person.  Here’s to a great school year.  Go Bison!

Every student.  Every day.
