This past fall the River Valley and New Buffalo School Boards voted unanimously to combine the High School sports programs phased in over the next few years. Recently, the two schools met with their respective student-leadership groups to solicit ideas for a new mascot and color palette for the program moving forward. Through numerous discussions, a joint student meeting and a comprehensive voting process available to all 6th-12th grade students at each school, the new mascot name and colors will be the Red Arrow Raiders with Carolina Blue and White as the primary colors with Graphite and Black serving as complementary colors. Both administrations felt it was of greatest importance that the students lead the decision for the mascot and program colors. Through thoughtful dialogue from our respective student bodies and an open and transparent voting process, the River Valley and New Buffalo School Districts are excited and confident that this decision will help move this merger in a positive direction.

Let's celebrate the achievements of New Buffalo Area Senior High School, which achieved Green School certification for the first time in 2023. New Buffalo is a great example of student leadership and innovation on energy initiatives. The school utilizes a student built and designed passive solar system on outbuildings and has implemented an energy saving program that uses high efficiency systems school-wide. They teach an entire unit on alternative energy in their Environmental course, and students present the solar heat collectors they build in that course to the public. In 2022-2023, students built a solar charging station that utilizes photovoltaics to charge student’s computers during their outdoor activities and to power up their data collecting equipment for outdoor labs. In addition to this great work at school, New Buffalo students also learn how to conduct energy audits at home. The Energy category can be a challenge for some schools in the MI Green Schools Program, but New Buffalo Area Senior High School has set a great example in their first year of participation in the program. Has your school demonstrated leadership and innovation in achieving their Green School certification? We would love to share your success to inspire others – Send your success stories to EGLE-Classroom@Michigan.gov to be featured in a future newsletter.
